Crittall-style windows have become a popular architectural choice for homeowners looking to combine traditional industrial character with contemporary living. Their distinctive slim frames, geometric glazing patterns and generous glass areas can add personality to everything from period properties and home extensions to modern renovations.
For homeowners in Radlett, WD7, Crittall-style windows can provide a particularly attractive way to introduce more natural light while creating a strong architectural feature. At Dev Enterprise UK, we design and manufacture bespoke glass and glazing solutions, including Crittall-style windows, for residential and commercial projects across Radlett, Hertfordshire and surrounding areas.
What Are Crittall-Style Windows?
Crittall-style windows are inspired by the classic steel-framed windows associated with early 20th-century architecture. The modern interpretation focuses on the same distinctive appearance: slim sightlines, dark frames and carefully arranged glass panels.
Today, Crittall-style does not necessarily mean traditional steel construction. Modern systems can use materials such as steel or aluminium to achieve the desired appearance while offering different performance, maintenance and design characteristics.
The result is a window style that works particularly well in both traditional and contemporary properties.
Why Are Crittall-Style Windows Popular in Radlett?
Radlett has a mixture of established homes, period properties, extensions and contemporary residential developments. This makes versatile architectural glazing an attractive option for homeowners who want to update their property without losing its character.
Crittall-style windows can be used to:
- Bring more natural light into interiors
- Create a strong architectural feature
- Connect indoor and outdoor spaces visually
- Complement both traditional and modern interiors
- Add an industrial-inspired character
- Create a stylish alternative to conventional window designs
- Separate rooms while maintaining an open feeling
For example, Crittall-style glazing can work particularly well in kitchen extensions, dining areas, living rooms, home offices and garden-facing spaces.
Crittall-Style Windows and Natural Light
One of the biggest attractions of Crittall-style glazing is the amount of glass used within the overall design.
Large, glazed areas can help make rooms feel brighter and more spacious. Instead of creating a visually heavy wall, a carefully designed Crittall-style window can provide a combination of framing and transparency.
This makes the style especially suitable for homeowners who want to maximize daylight while maintaining a distinctive frame pattern.
Energy Efficiency Matters in 2026
While appearance remains an important reason for choosing Crittall-style windows, modern homeowners are increasingly considering thermal performance as part of their renovation decisions.
UK building standards continue to place significant emphasis on energy efficiency. The 2026 edition of Approved Document L provides current guidance relating to energy efficiency requirements under Part L of the Building Regulations in England.
This means that choosing the right glazing specification is an important part of a modern window project.
Depending on the project requirements, suitable modern glazing configurations can help improve thermal performance compared with older single-glazed systems. When planning replacement or new windows, the overall specification should be considered rather than choosing a frame based on appearance alone.
At Dev Enterprise, we can discuss the glazing and frame options available for your individual project and help you select a solution that balances appearance, performance and budget.
Double Glazing and Crittall-Style Designs
For homeowners concerned about comfort and energy efficiency, double glazing can be an important consideration.
A modern double-glazed Crittall-style window can combine the visual appeal of slim framed glazing with improved thermal performance compared with traditional single glazing.
The exact performance will depend on the frame system, glass specification, dimensions and overall installation. For this reason, every project should be assessed individually.
Bespoke Crittall-Style Windows for Your Property
One of the advantages of choosing a bespoke glazing company is the ability to design the window around the property rather than selecting a standard size.
At Dev Enterprise, Crittall-style windows can be tailored to the requirements of individual projects. Frame style, dimensions, glazing configuration and finish can all be considered during the design process.
This is particularly useful for:
- Home renovations
- Property extensions
- Replacement windows
- Period-style properties
- Contemporary homes
- Internal partitions
- Commercial interiors
- Feature glazing
The aim is to create a finished installation that looks intentional and works naturally with the surrounding architecture.
Steel or Aluminium Crittall-Style Windows?
The best material depends on the project.
Steel can provide an authentic, strong architectural appearance and is often associated with traditional Crittall-style designs. Aluminium, meanwhile, can offer a lightweight modern alternative and is widely used for contemporary slim-profile glazing.
Rather than choosing purely based on appearance, homeowners should consider factors such as:
- Desired frame appearance
- Glazing requirements
- Thermal performance
- Maintenance
- Project budget
- Opening configuration
- Property architecture
Dev Enterprise works with steel and aluminium frame options for Crittall-style designs, allowing the specification to be tailored to the requirements of the project.
Where Can You Use Crittall-Style Windows?
Crittall-style glazing is not limited to external windows.
It can also be used to create a coordinated design throughout a property.
- Kitchen Extensions: Crittall-style windows can complement modern kitchens and extensions, particularly where homeowners want plenty of daylight and a strong architectural feature.
- Living Rooms: Large glazed sections can help brighten living spaces while creating a visual connection with the garden.
- Home Offices: Crittall-style glazing can provide separation while retaining an open and light atmosphere.
- Internal Partitions: The same industrial-inspired design can be used for internal partitions between kitchens, dining areas, hallways and living spaces.
- Commercial Interiors: The style can also suit offices, studios, retail spaces and hospitality interiors where a contemporary architectural appearance is required.
Crittall-Style Windows for Period and Modern Properties
One reason for the continuing popularity of this style is its versatility.
In a period property, Crittall-style glazing can complement existing architectural details while introducing a contemporary element. In a modern home, the slim dark framing can create a strong contrast against lighter walls, timber, stone or minimalist interiors.
For Radlett homeowners, this flexibility makes Crittall-style windows suitable for a wide range of renovation and new-build projects.
What Should You Consider Before Installation?
Before ordering Crittall-style windows, it is worth considering more than just the visual design.
- Window Size
The dimensions will influence the overall appearance, frame configuration and glazing requirements.
- Opening Style
Depending on the application, you may require fixed glazing, opening windows or a combination of different configurations.
- Glass Specification
The appropriate glass should be selected according to the location, application, safety requirements and thermal performance needed.
- Frame Finish
Black remains a popular choice for the classic industrial appearance, but the appropriate finish can be selected to complement the overall property design.
- Building Regulations
Window replacement and new glazing projects may need to meet applicable Building Regulations requirements. Current Approved Document L guidance covers energy efficiency requirements for buildings in England.
Professional advice should be obtained where the project requires building control approval or where there are specific planning or conservation considerations.
